In 1953 an old mill house in Wotton under Edge came up for sale, and was bought for £610. The upper storey was made into a church, and Fr Paul Keyte made arrangements with the Bishop for it to be consecrated and dedicated to the Holy Cross, a reference to the ‘Crutched’ Friars who were in Wotton in the Middle Ages. Their distinctive habit was marked with a cross, hence their name.
